News...?

Yes, there is news. Not a whole lot, and nothing that will make your heart
beat too much faster, but yes, news:

/Links...

Thanks to John Voigt and Charlotte Dick for their news about the new Relay,
RELAY@TAMVM1, Texas A&M University. This would seem to be replacement for
the not-so-missed conference machine HELPDESK.

A truly basic explanation of BITNET services for new users...

The main reason BITNET exists is transfer and dispersal of information.
There are many facets of that function, true, but information is what it
generally boils down to. BITNET server machines function to make information
available according to the it's imporatance and immediacy. For example:

File servers: These server machines store files on a userid much like
yours and mine. The difference is that this type of virtual machine is
running a program which will respond to messages (commands) sent to it over
BITNET lines. The response is a file which you have requested through
your command (such as SENDME NEWS LISTING). Because a file may be
stored on a file server for an indefinite period of time the information
on these servers is generally of lasting value and imporatance.

This is not always the case. There are exceptions to any rule, and since
BITNET is very active, there are a LOT of exceptions here. This should,
however, serve as a good staring point in figuring out what is avaialble.

Name servers: These server machines are more or less databases which
will respond to your commands in much the same way as file servers.
The database in a name server contains information on BITNET users.
Your command might look like: WHOIS ALBERT TUMOS. If that name is in
the database the response will list information on that person and
how you may contact him over BITNET. Some name servers will allow
you to search for people interested in a certain topic and receive a
list of names and userids as a response.

Electronic magazines: The information in electronic magazines is
generally of lasting value becuse they are all (with one notable exception)
monthlies. This gives the editors/writers a certain amount of time to
produce a quality product. The problem behind producing such magazines
is that a lot of time and effort go into them. (Especially the
monthlies). There also seems to be an article shortage. With so many
people in BITNET it is a shame that more can't find the time to
contribute to this sort thing. The information in these is important
enough to have back issues stored on the file servers.

Note: The Bitlist is NOT in need of articles. I beat the
article shortage by not printing any at all.

Mailing lists, digests, and list servers: The information disseminated
in this fashion is of immediate interest to a specific group of people.
The digest is is a mailing list where the mail is organized and edited
into a magazine-like format by a moderator. Some of these digests are
stored on file servers. (Then again, most are not.) List servers are
simply server machines that maintain some mailing lists. Usually a person
on a mailing list does not posess a copy of the list, he only mails his
letter to a central location (like a list server) which will then mail
out the letter to the current list.

Relays: This is BITNET information transfer at it's highest speed, the
speed of conversation. In VERY simple terms, a Relay will allow Bitnet
users at remote nodes to 'sign on' and send it interactive messages.
These messages are fowarded to the other people who are signed on. In
this way a simple form of teleconferencing may take place. Different
Relays will send messages on to other Relays, so if you are signed on to
one Relay you are signed on to them ALL. The conversation on these
servers ranges from important news of the day to current smalltalk.

That sums up much of what BITNET services are about. The speed with which
information is transmitted is usually in inverse proportion to it's value.

That's all...

That is everything for this issue. Tune in next week for more exiting
adventures. Same time, same station:

                                    Chris
                                    (Fuzzyman)
